Looking for some DIY inspo? Are you concerned your homemade meals aren't cutting the mustard? This is a classic, balanced recipe that makes around a kilogram of food for an adult dog, using mostly things you can find in any major supermarket.

No long-winded backstory - just a balanced recipe.

INGREDIENTS

250g chicken wings

200g pork mince

130g vegetables of your choice, cooked or finely grated

100g lamb liver, chopped up

100g beef kidney, chopped up

100g egg (about 2)

50 oysters, fresh or tinned (smoked is fine)

50g leafy greens OR 5g Green Goddess functional topper

15g hemp seeds

5g wheatgerm oil (or good sunflower oil, like Melrose)

1g kelp powder

METHOD

There's no strict method to this recipe, and how you prepare it will depend on how big your dog is. I typically recommend mixing the veggies, seeds, eggs, oils and powders in a bowl, then distributing them evenly among daily portions.

Chop the meat and bones down to size as required, then distribute them into daily serves with the other ingredients.

You can also just chuck everything in a Tupperware and portion at mealtime; whatever works for you.

Not every serve needs to have everything in the recipe, but it's a good idea to offer a few different things each day.

If you want a quicker, easier option, omit the bottom 6 ingredients and opt for one of our meal balancing blends instead.

This recipe is written in accordance with the AAFCO standards for adult dogs, making it a "complete and balanced" recipe. As formulated, the key nutritional values are 1485 k/cals per kilogram, of which 14.5% is protein, 9.27% is fat, 0.52% is fibre, and 1.76% is carbs (plus 71.8% water and 2.1% ash). The calcium to phosphorus ratio is appropximatey 1:1.

This is a relatively high to average calorie recipe, ideal for dogs that are a healthy weight and don't have any common food sensitivities. We suggest feeding round 2-3% of your dog's ideal weight, so a 10kg dog would eat 200-300g of food per day. Always monitor your dog when they eat bones. It is safer to feed larger bones, rather than small, as this encourages more chewing. If you need to sub chicken wings for necks or drums, that's perfectly fine and has a minimal impact on "balance".
